Zika Virus

Despite discovery in East Africa in 1947, Zika virus has gone largely unstudied. As the virus — now associated with birth defects and neurological disorders — spreads across South and Central America, public health officials are eager to act. Researchers at UW–Madison and the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center have begun work with mice and nonhuman primates to describe the progress of Zika virus infection and the virus’ effect in pregnancy.
